The Sri Lanka Army Tuesday prevented Tamil civilians renovating the welcome
arch made of concrete across the junction where the Kachchai and Kandy roads
meet in the heart of Chavakachcheri town in Jaffna district. The
Chavakachcheri Urban Council (UC) constructed this welcome arch and it was
destroyed in the military operation launched by the SLA in the year 2000,
UC sources said.
SLA soldiers rushed to the site Tuesday and stopped the renovation work of the welcome arch and ordered the workers not to continue the work anymore, civil sources said. The people of the area were Tuesday engaged in renovating the welcome arch
as a part of the preparations to celebrate the Maveerar (Great Heros) Day. Meanwhile, people in the district are engaged in decorating roads and constructing pandals to pay homage to the martyrs of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam who sacrificed their
lives in the Tamil people's struggle for freedom, sources said.
