CWC reveals election strategy

The Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC), a major constituent of the United National Front (UNF) government said it would decide about its future political alliance with any major political party only after the announcement of a general election. CWC leader and minister Mr.Arumugam Thondaman said at a press briefing held in Kandy, capital of the central province Sunday evening that "it is not the opportune moment to announce CWC's decision regarding future election alliances when the country is politically unstable."

Earlier Mr.Thondaman paid courtesy call to Mahanayake of Malwatte Chapter Venerable Rambukwelle Vipassi Thera and Asgiriya Chapter Mahanayake Thera Venerable Buddharakita and discussed with them about the current political crisis and the importance of finding a urgent solution to restart the stalled peace process, sources said.

Mr.Thondaman said Sri Lanka's President and Prime Minister should join hands irrespective of their political differences to find a lasting political solution to the ethnic conflict by restarting the peace process.

The current political impasse should come to end quickly to restore the political stability and to take forward the economic development proposals without further delay, Mr.Thondaman said.

Both leaders should take into consideration that the permanent peace is sine qua non for the successful implementation of economic development proposals, Mr.Thondaman added.

The current instability in the southern major political parties has been causing immense harm to the minority communities in all spheres. Hence the current political crisis should be brought to an end without further delay, Mr.Thondaman said.

CWC parliament Mr.Yogarajan accompanied his leader during the press briefing, sources said.
