Eight LTTE cadres including four women cadres who have been detained for allegedly carrying ammunition in their pickup truck on 14 July 2003, had their remand extended till 30 January by the Batticaloa High Court Judge M.H.M.Ajmeer when they appeared in Court Friday, legal sources said.
The eight LTTE members were arrested at the Kallady bridge checkpoint when they were travelling from Akkaraipattu to Batticalao in their pickup truck. Police alleged that a parcel containing 102 rounds of ammunition and four grenades was found in the vehicle. Legal sources said that the recovered ammunitions have been sent to the Police Investigative Division in Colombo for analysis and that the Court has requested a report from the Attorney Generals office on the applicable provisions in the MoU under which legal action on the defendents should be taken. The Court is still waiting for the Attorney General's office to respond, according to sources. There was increased security around the High Court premises on Friday when the defendents were brought to appear in Court, security sources said.
