Complaints fall on deaf ears

Murugupillai Sreetharan (22), father of three children was beaten up by unidentified armed men when he alighted from a bus at Naaranthanai in Kayts, an island off the Jaffna Peninsula at 11:00 a.m. today, said sources in Kayts.

When Sreetharan's wife went to make a complaint about the matter at the Kayts police station, the police refused to entertain the complaint, said sources.

She had then met R Ramamoorthy, ex-MP of the Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP) for the Jaffna District, who advised her to complain to International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Human Rights Commission's Jaffna branch.

The EPDP maintains camps and armed cadres in Kayts and other islands off the Jaffna peninsula.
