The Sri Lanka Army has allowed resettlement of a few internally displaced families in the high security zones in Thenmaradchchi south division in Jaffna district on a staggered basis. The first batch of IDPs would be
allowed to resettle in areas close to Thoppu Pillaiyair Kovil in
Maravanpulo village on the Tamil-Sinhala New Year Day, civil sources said.
The SLA has further allowed resettlement of 40 IDP families in the Kaithady-Navatkuli area and, 12 IDP families in Kiolakandy that should take place later, sources said. However, Thenmaradchchi Divisional Secretariat sources said the SLA has not informed the DS about how long these 52 IDP families have to wait for their resettlement. During the military operation launched by the SLA in 1990 about nine thousand acres of paddy fields and highlands have been brought under the high security zones, civil sources said.
