TRO, Red Cross care for displaced in East

About two hundred families, who fled to Muttur to escape from the fighting between the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and cadres loyal to renegade commander Karuna in Verugal and Kathiraveli villages, are given shelter and food in schools in Eachilampathu division in the Muttur south held by the LTTE, sources said.

The Trincomalee district branch of the Sri Lanka Red Cross rushed to site and established a medical unit to provide medical and health services to
the refugees. The SLRC has also organized a mobile medical clinic to Eachchilampathu area to provide medical facilities to the displaced, SLRC official said. Tamil Rehabilitation Organization (TRO) in Trincomalee has started providing food and other assistance to these refugees. TRO officials in Trincomalee Saturday morning took one lorry load of dry ration and other essential food items to Eachilampathu and distributed to the displaced
families, sources said.

A non-governmental organisation "Virudcham" based in Muttur east area has been providing essential food and other items to the displaced due to the current clashes, sources said. Monitors of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission in Trincomalee also visited Eachilampathu to see the situation there following the military operation against the renegade commander Karuna, sources said. About two thousand persons of 683 families displaced from Vakarai and Kathiraveli villages and staying in Mankerni area are looked after by about fifty volunteers of the Batticaloa district branch of the Sri Lanka Red cross, sources said.
