Three organizations registered as legal Non-Governmental Organizations in Sri Lanka and in the North-East are contributing in a major way to the rehabilitation, reconstruction and humanitarian work in the Tamil homeland, the Liberation Tigers said in a statement Monday.
The oldest of the NGOs is the Tamils Rehabilitation Organization (TRO), formed in 1985, which concentrates its activities on rehabilitation, resettlement and reconstruction. The TRO has a Socio-Economic Development Bank (SEDB) with six branches for savings and micro-credit for self-employment, small business and agricultural ventures. The Centre for Women's Development and Rehabilitation(CWDR), formed in 1992, concentrates on the welfare of women and children in the Tamil homeland. The Economic Consultancy House (TECH), formed in 1993, concentrates on development. The TECH has been focused on providing alternative energy sources in the Tamil homeland. The LTTE said that all three NGOs are involved in village development, people empowerment, welfare of women and children, the underprivileged and disadvantaged, children and adult education, gender equity, pre-schools and health and environment. The NGOs are funded by the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, various UN agencies, local and international NGOs, local and expatriate Tamil communities and to a small extent by the Sri Lankan Government, the LTTE added.
