The Kayts Magistrate, Mr.A.Premshankar, Tuesday ordered remand for thirteen suspects who were produced by the police in connection with the alleged burning down of a camp of the paramilitary Eelam Peoples Democratic Party (EPDP) in Analaitivu following the April 2 general election, legal sources said.
A posse of police personnel of the Kayts Police Monday went to Analaitivu and arrested thirteen civilians from their houses in a cordon and search operation, civil right sources said. The Magistrate ordered remand for the 13 suspects till May 10th in the Jaffna prisons, legal sources said. Analaitivu is an islet cut off from the Jaffna mainland and other islets in the peninsula by sea. Residents of the village fear that the Police could indulge in indiscriminate arrest of the villagers as an act of revenge, civil sources said. Meanwhile, Tamil National Alliance parliamentarians Mr.S.Gajendran and Mrs. Padmini Sithamparanathan, Tuesday evening visited the suspects in the Jaffna prisons, sources said.
