US sniffer-dogs in de-mining operation in Jaffna

The Sri Lanka Army is to deploy six sniffer-dogs from United States of America (USA) in its demining operation in the Jaffna district, an official of the de-mining activities in district secretariat said.

The SLA has formulated a comprehensive plan to identify areas where mines are buried and to remove them in a systematic way. The SLA has made arrangement to bring six sniffer-dogs from USA to start the first phase of the de-mining programme.

Jaffna district secretariat sources said that the first stage would commence covering Ariyalai and its suburbs in the Jaffna town. Thereafter the SLA will extend its demining operation to other areas, sources said.
