Sri Lanka experienced heavy rain Sunday night inundating low-lying areas with flood in several parts of the island. North-eastern coastal areas from Jaffna, Mullaitivu Trincomalee and Batticaloa recorded several millimetres of rainfall ending 24 hours on Monday morning, meteorological department sources said.
The turbulence in the low atmosphere over Sri Lanka is expected to bring more rains Monday and for two more days till Wednesday until the northeast monsoon sets in, the sources said. Batticaloa Sunday night recorded about 100 mm rainfalls, the sources said. Met sources further predicted rainfalls throughout night in all parts of the country exceeding 100 mm in some parts of the country. Civil authorities in several districts have been alerted to take precautionary steps to avert breakdown of food supply to flood affected areas and to provide temporary shelter to homeless. The authorities have warned residents in flood prone areas to be extra vigilant.
