Transport fares increase again

Bus fares will increase by about 6% effective from 1st October, Transport Minister Mr. Felix Perera said Monday. This decision was taken at a discussion held Monday afternoon between the representatives of Private Bus Owners Association and Transport Ministry officials following the increase of price on fuel, sources said.

Meanwhile, a committee has been appointed by the Transport Ministry to work out a formula for the increase of train fares, sources said.

This is the second increase in the bus fare in two months.

Private Bus Owners Association threatened the Sri Lanka government that it would launch a strike from Tuesday midnight if the government failed to approve an increase in bus fare.
