People's Committee for Peace and Goodwill (PCPG) in Jaffna district Thursday handed over a memorandum to Major General Sunil Tennekoon, Jaffna area commander of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA), requesting him to take steps to reopen
Sangupiddy-Kerativu road to link peninsula from the south, civil sources said.
The memorandum was handed over to Major General Sunil Tennekoon during the
discussion he had with a delegation of PCPG Thursday at the Jaffna Bishop's
House. Major General Sunil Tennekoon is reported to have told the PCPG
delegation that he would consider the request favourably, sources said. The Memorandum further demanded the following:
- Until a decision is taken to allow resettlement of internally displaced
families in their lands inside the high security zones, action should be
taken to pay rent for the lands and houses occupied by the security forces.
- Action should be taken to pull back the forward defense lines of the SLA
enabling the Tellipalai Cancer Hospital to function smoothly.
- SLA should relax restrictions on the movement of teachers, students and
parent to go to recommenced schools, which are located inside the HSZ of
the Valigamam North Division.
- Immediate steps should be taken to stop the removal of sand from
Maravanpulo and Colombagam areas, which come under the HSZ of the SLA.
