SLA soldiers assault Vadamaradchchi youth

Mr.Soorasingham Prakash aged 19 was admitted Sunday night to the Valvettithurai government hospital with serious injuries alleged assaulted by a group of soldiers of the Sri Lanka Army stationed at the Viyaparimoolai army check point in Vadamaradchchi division in Jaffna district, civil sources in Vadamaradchy said.

Investigation carried out so far into this assault revealed that the injured youth Sunday evening stopped when his motor bicycle brokedown near the Viyaparimoolai army checkpoint.

Soldiers manning the checkpoint had immediately rushed to the site and started assaulting the youth for keeping the motorcycle near their checkpoint. Residents of the village on hearing the assault on the youth had rushed to the site and started shouting at the soldiers.

Thereafter several soldiers of the checkpoint had threatened to fire at residents.

On receipt of information army officials of 51-2 SLA camp had gone to the site and diffused the situation.

They later informed the residents that army soldiers who created the trouble were inebriated and had been called back to the main camp, villagers said.
