ICRC, Rights Experts meet LTTE delegation, NESOHR in Geneva

A five member International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) team and another team of Swiss based Human Rights experts met with the Constitutional Affairs Committee of the LTTE and with NorthEast Secretariat on Human Rights (NESOHR) team in Geneva Tuesday. Later in the day, Human Rights lawyer Ms Karen Parker, conducted a session to the NESOHR members on Geneva Conventions on Human Rights as applied to post conflict situation, sources in Geneva said.
 The ICC team was led by Delegate General to Asia and the Pacific, Reto Meister. Swiss Rights experts team included Loubna Freih, Geneva Director, Human Rights Watch, Nicholas Howen, Secretary General, International Commission of Jurists, Peter Splinter, Amnesty International and Rachel Brett, Representative of Human Rights and Refugees, Quaker United Nations office. LTTE Head of Political Wing, S.P. Thamilchelvan also had a separate meeting with the ICRC delegates where matters related to protection of civilans in war affected areas were discussed. Thamilchelvan was given assurances that "ICRC will continue to extend its services in the NorthEast with specific reference to manning of the checkpoints and access to people in detention," LTTE's peace secretariat website said.
