Mallakam Magistrate Ms Sarojini Ilankovan Wednesday allowed an application
made by the Kankesanthurai Police to send samples of explosives recovered
from 10 Indian fishermen by the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) to Sri Lanka Government Analysts and ordered further
remand for 10 Indians till October 22, legal sources said.
Indian fishermen with a consignment of explosives were arrested by the SLN
with the trawler close to the Kankesanthurai harbour located in
the high security zone of the SLN in Sri Lankan territorial waters last
Sunday midnight. Kankesanthurai Police Wednesday produced the consignment of explosives
and prison officials produced 10 Indian fishermen from remand in Mallakam
courts. The Police then made an application to court for permission to send
samples of explosives to Government Analyst and it was allowed,
legal sources said. The magistrate further ordered to keep the balance explosives and the
Indian trawler in the safe custody of Kankesanthurai navy and Palaly
military airbase, legal sources said. In another development, a team of police officials arrived in Jaffna from
Colombo and has been recording statements from the 10 Indian fishermen now
being detained in Jaffna prison, police sources said.
