CTTU wants kerosene at subsidized price to rural teachers

The Ceylon Tamil Teachers' Union (CTTU) Sunday wrote to the Minister of Education and Minister of Power and Energy to make immediate arrangement to sell kerosene at subsidized price to teachers who are serving in schools in villages without electricity, CTTU sources said.

Government of Sri Lanka decided recently to sell kerosene to Samurdhi (poverty alleviation) officers at subsidized prices.

CTTU general secretary Mr.T.Mahasivam in his letter to the ministers concerned pointed out that teachers serving in rural schools cannot afford to buy kerosene at the increased price.

These teachers depend kerosene lamps to organize and prepare for teaching assignments at school. Most of the villages in the Liberation Tigers held areas in the northeast province and the upcountry do not have electricity.

Several villages in Sinhala areas are also do not have electricity supply.
