Human Rights Commissioner meets Jaffna journalists

Mr.N.Selvakumaran, Commissioner of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL), addressing a press briefing in Jaffna said HRCSL would not hesitate to take action against errand policemen and Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers for violation of human rights if it receives complaints supported with evidence. He met with the Jaffna based journalists at the regional office of HRCSL Sunday.

Mr Selvakumaran said more human violations now take place in Batticaloa district and not in Jaffna. Violations took place in Jaffna district before the Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). "Now we receive few complaints against the government security forces," he added.

Referring to the allegation that complaints are not recorded in Tamil language in police stations in Jaffna district Mr.Selvakumaran said action is being taken to conduct Tamil language classes to Sinhalese policemen and post them in the Jaffna district, as no Tamil is willing to join the police force.
