Handicap International inaugurates rehabilitation centre

Handicap International inaugurated its Physical Rehabilitation Centre in Batticaloa on Friday, 3 December, to mark the International Day of People with Disability, in the presence of representatives of the Batticaloa District Secretariat, NGOs community, UN agencies, ICRC and the Batticaloa Health Services, sources said.
The centre, located at No.1 Periya Uppodai Road in Batticaloa district will provide services such as manufacturing and fitting of artificial legs, callipers and special seating devices, adaptation and distribution of mobility aids like crutches, wheelchairs and tricycles. A physical therapy department will ensure the preparation of the client for the appropriate fitment as well as the usage training.

Since the close down of the Jaipur Foot Programme in Batticaloa, these services were not available on the Eastern Coast of Sri Lanka, the sources said. These services are addressed to the persons who had lost their leg, persons affected by polio and children with disabilities who would require aids and appliances for their independent mobility. The centre is open for consultations and registration from Monday to Thursday between 8 and 11 am. As a part of the Physical Therapy Department, a mobile team will provide therapy and follow-up to the patients living in remote areas of Batticaloa and Amparai districts, the sources said

The creation and the functioning of this Physical Rehabilitation Centre have been benefiting by the co-operation of Eastern Human Economic Development (EHED) Batticaloa and are supported by funds from ECHO, UNICEF and the French Embassy in Sri Lanka.
