The administration of the Jaffna Municipal Council (JM) is struggling to keep the city clean as the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) has refused permission to use the dumping ground of the council located in the Sandilipay Divisional Secretariat division to dispose garbage collected within the municipal limit, JMC Commissioner Dr.S.Gunarasa said.
For about a decade the JMC used its own dumping ground located in Crow Island to dispose the garbage. The JMC stopped using the Crow Island as a dumping ground when about twenty-five families settled in the Crow Island with the assistance National Housing Authority protested, sources said. Thereafter the JMC with the assistance of the Jaffna Government Agent found an alternate site in Sandilipay village and started dumping the garbage collected in the Jaffna city there. Now the Sri Lanka Army, which has one its camps in the area, has told the JMC to stop dumping garbage in Sandilipay area, municipal sources said. Hence the JMC is finding very difficult to keep the city clean by removing heaps of garbage collected within its administrative limit, sources said.
