Human Rights Day meeting held in Trincomalee[TamilNet, Friday, 10 December 2004, 21:29 GMT]"The right to live has not been included in the Sri Lankan Constitution and laws relating to human rights are only in the Statute but several of such laws are not in force," said Attorney-at-Law Mr.T. Karikalan addressing the International Human Rights Day meeting held in Trincomalee St.Joseph's College Friday which was organized by the Trincomalee regional office of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) in collaboration with the Trincomalee Police. A dance performed at the Human Rights meeting, Friday.
Ms V.Mathiaparanam, Trincomalee regional co-ordinator of the HRCSL made the inaugural address followed by the speech of Trincomalee Assistant Superintendent of Police Mr.Priyantha Weerasuriya. Mr.Weerasuriya appealed that all citizens should work with dedication to strengthen the current peace environ a permanent one. Mr.Karikalan further said although the right to live has not been included in the country's constitution, it is a moral duty of the government in power to ensure that right to all citizens irrespective of their race, religion and caste and other differences.
