Sri Lanka loses 40,139 man-days due to strike

The number of man-days lost due to strikes in the sectors of estate and establishment in Sri Lanka up to third quarter of this year are 40,139. During this period 46 strikes took place, 21 in the estate sector and the balance in the establishment, according to the labour ministry statistics.
The total number of industrials disputes reported at the end of the previous year is 12,913. Of them 4,698 disputes had been solved by September this year in the two sectors and a sum of Rs 34,182 million had been paid as compensation to employees in this regard, an official in the Industrial Relations Division (IRD) of the Labour Department said. The duty of the IRD division is to enforce the Industrial Disputes Act, the Termination of Employment of Workmen Act, Payment of Gratuity Act and Trade Union Ordinance. The number of disputes referred for arbitration is 17 and 34 referred under the Collective Agreements registered under Industrial Dispute Act by September, sources said. Of 42 applications received from employers to terminate employees under the Termination of Employment of Workmen Act 20 were finalized The total number of applications received from employers under the termination of employment of workmen act is 42 and the total number of applications that has already been finalised is 20. 75 applications were finalised out of 183 complaints received from employees under the same act.
