Search operation, 1 killed in East

Fifty five civilians were arrested in a cordon and search operation in Akkaraipattu market in the Amparai district today. All were taken to the Amparai police station for further interrogation, said sources in Amparai.

16 are still being held in the police station while the others were released after the EPDP leader, Mr. Douglas Devanantha intervened.

Meanwhile, Velupillai Kannamuthu, 45, who went to collect fire wood in Sagamam jungle was shot dead by Special Task Force (STF) of the Sri Lankan Police this morning.

Kannamuthu was the father of 4 children. His body was brought to the Akkaraipattu hospital around 12.00 noon.

The Coroner, Mr. P. Selvanayagam, who conducted the inquiry recorded Velupillai Kannamuthu's case as accidental death.
