VVT civil leader assaulted by Police

Mr.Rajadurai Inthirarasa (41), a leading social worker in Valvettithurai
(VVT) was criticially injured following alleged assault by the Officer-in
Charge of the VVT Police Saturday night when he protested against
harassment of inmates of the Tsunami welfare centre located at Chidambara College, civil sources said.
An argument arose between the policemen and members of the Task Force that manages
the centre Saturday night when the policemen guarding the centre called out all inmates including women and children for checking Saturday night. Few
minutes later a group of policemen came to the site in a jeep and assaulted
Mr.Rajadurai Inthirarasa and took him to police station, sources said. Mr.Inthirarasa is a member of the STF committee and also an official of the
VVT fisheries society. He was later admitted to VVT hospital with injuries
on his chest, sources said. Policemen deployed in the welfare centre at Chidambara
College was withdrawn following this incident. However police protection to
other welfare centres in the area are continuing, sources said. Meanwhile, a team of police officials visited the site and started
investigation into the alleged assault, sources said.
