Environmental officials visit Jaffna coastal areas

A team of the Central Environmental Authority Saturday visited Jaffna district and held discussion with representatives of fisheries co-operative officials regarding strengthening the coastal areas by constructing buffer zones following Tsunami disaster, sources said.
Mr.Cheliyan, LTTE Sea Tiger Deputy Commander and Mr.Arunan of the LTTE
Jaffna district political division attended the discussion. Mr.A.Baliah of
Vadamaradchchi Fisheries Society presided, sources said. CEA team led by its Chairman Mr.De Costa visited the coastal areas affected
by Tsunami. Fisheries representatives told the CEA team that boulders should be placed along the coastline preventing
future sea erosion and Tsunami disaster, sources said. They suggested that boulders should be placed from Munai to KatKovalam and from Point Pedro to Thumapalai in the Vadamaradchchi division. They said
displaced from coastal areas due to tsunami have agreed to relocate their houses about three hundred metres from the shore, sources said. The CEA team later attended a discussion held in the Jaffna district
secretariat.
