Indian medical team completes Trinco mission

Indian navy medical team, which served in Kuchchaveli government hospital in the north of Trincomalee district since December 28 two days after Tsunami disaster completed its mission and was entertained at a farewell function at the hospital Monday morning. Captain Muralitharan Nair, Commanding Officer of the INS Jamuna and Rear Admiral Upali Ranaweera, Commander, Eastern Naval Area of the Sri Lanka Navy participated as chief guests, sources said.

Earlier soldiers of the Sri Lanka Navy and Indian Navy held a joint farewell parade in the hospital grounds.

Surgeon Commander Mr.Koshi (Surgeon), Surgeon Commander M.Dharmameer MO anaesthesiologist and Surgeon Commander K.K.Mishra (Psychiatrist) of the Indian naval medical team attended the event.

Dr.E.G.Gnanagunalan and Dr.S.Arulkumaran represented the Sri Lanka's health department.

Rear Admiral Upali Ranaweera thanked the Indian naval medical team for its services during the critical period following Tsunami. He then handed over gifts and token appreciation letter to Capt.Muralitharan Nair, sources said.

Dr.Gnanagunalan on behalf of Sri Lanka's health department thanked the services rendered by the Indian naval medical team to Tsunami affected people of the north of the Trincomalee district at a time when local health services were struggling to cope. The Indian naval medical which arrived in Kuchchaveli two days after the Tsunami hit the coastal areas immediately started repairing the damaged hospital, removed debris and cleaned the wells in the area.

It also conducted mobile clinics in welfare centres sheltering tsunami victims and conducted health education programme, Dr.Gnanagunalan said.

Dr.Gnanagunalan handed a letter of appreciation to Surgeon Commander R.Koshi, leader of the Indian naval medical team. Capt.Muralitharan Nair thanked the Sri Lanka Navy and the government health department for their assistance during their stay in Kuchchaveli.

Indian and Sri Lankan naval officials thanked Ms.Rukmani Rajagopal, native of Kuchchaveli and the wife of a retired English teacher for her voluntary service as a translator to Indian naval medical team, sources said.
