NE Athletic Federation formed

The Athletic Federation of North East Province was inaugurated Saturday in Killinochchi. Representatives from eight District Athletic Association attended the inaugural meeting with Mr.K.Paapa, Head of the Tamileelam Sports Department as the chief guest. Federations for Football, Netball, Karate and Cricket Council for the North East Province would also be formed before the end of February, Mr.Paapa said at the event, sources said.

The objective of the newly formed NE Provincial Athletic Federation is to identify talented athletics in the province and to provide them with training to compete national and international level events. The federation would also contribute to the development of coach and technical officials in the field, said Mr.Paapa.

NE Athletic Federation would sent 24 delegates- three each representing eight districts, Jaffna, Killinochchi, Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, Mannar, Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Amparai - to the national level federation meetings, NE federation sources said.

A committee comprising with eight members one for each district- was elected at the inaugural meeting.

Mr.T.M.Thevendran was elected first President of the Federation, Mr.S.Wijeneethan General Secretary and Mr.P.Kirubakaran Treasurer. The office bearers are: - Vice Presidents Mr.Jude Figurado, Mr.M.A.Justin Perera and Mr.S.Kanagarajah. Assistant Secretary- Mr.M.Y.S.Arfeen and Assistant Treasurer-Mr.N.Muhunthan.
