Security tightened after blast

Arms, ammunition and other military hardware worth of more than 10 million Rs. (USD160,000) were destroyed in the explosion in the ammunition dump in the 211 Brigade Headquarters at Thachchankulam, in Vavuniya, said SLA sources in Vavuniya.

Initial explosion in an ammunition dump used by the STF around 12.38 p.m triggered a series of explosions and fire, they said.

Quick action to extinguish the fire in this temporary dump prevented further explosions in the main ammunition dump, they said.

Security has been further tightened in the ammunition dumps in the camp, sources said.
