A group of people returning home after poosai (worship) at a temple in Chulipuram, 15 km northwest of Jaffna, were accosted and asked to hand over the food they were carrying by soldiers of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) posing off as members of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) around 8 p.m. on Monday, said sources in Jaffna.
When the group refused to part with the food saying it was given to them at the temple, the SLA forcibly took away their national identity cards and asked to them to come to Chulipuram SLA camp to retrieve it. However, when the members of the group went on Tuesday morning to pick up their ID cards, some of them were assaulted and T. Thambiratnam (27) was detained at the camp, said sources. He is yet to be released.
