Soldiers harass civilians at Muhamalai army checkpoint

Jaffna district Head of LTTE Political Wing, C.Ilamparithi, has complained to the
Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) that harassment and intimidation by
soldiers of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) at Muhamalai check point on civilians is on
the increase. He requested the SLMM to take immediate steps to stop this
trend, sources said.
Mr.Ilamparithi met with Mr.Hagrup Haukland, the acting head of the SLMM, when
he visited to Jaffna recently. Mr.Haukland met with
Major General Sunil Tennekoon, Jaffna area commander of the Sri Lanka Army
Wednesday and obtained the army version regarding the ground situation in
the peninsula, sources said. Mr.Haukland met with Mr.Ilamparithi Thursday and discussed in detail the
recent incidents involving SLA soldiers and the civilians following the
death of a student in an accident involving an army vehicle and an elderly
civilian in army shooting, sources said.
