JVP supports Cuba, China’s anti secession law

Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), the main coalition partner of President Chandrika Kumaratunga’s government, said Thursday that Sri Lankan should oppose the US resolution against Cuba at the UN Human Rights Commission. “It is the internationalist duty of this government to oppose the US resolution and support of Cuba”, said Mr. Wimal Weerawansa MP, the powerful propaganda secretary of the JVP in Parliament Thursday. Meanwhile, the JVP sent a message to China’s President Hu Jintao Thursday expressing support for the anti session law he promulgated on 14 March to prevent Taiwan from declaring independence.

Mr. Weerawansa said there have been no human rights violations in Cuba.

"Gross human rights abuses have been committed in camps run by America for prisoners from Afghanistan and Iraq in Guantanamo and Abu Gharib prisons”, he asserted. Mr.Weerawansa said he hoped the President and the foreign ministry would have the strength of conviction to support Cuba against the US resolution. In a letter to Mr. Hu Jintao President of the People’s Republic of China, Mr. Somawansa Amarasingha, leader of the JVP, praised China for passing the Anti Secession Law against Taiwan.

The Anti Secession Law, intended to prevent Taiwan’s secession from China, came into effect on 14 March after Chinese President Hu Jintao signed a Presidential decree to promulgate it.

"The new reforms passed by the National People’s Congress will benefit 1.3 billion people in the People’s Republic of China. It states that China has every right to defeat (sic) sovereignty, territorial integrity and National dignity… and PRC is a ‘glorious example for Sri Lanka’, a nation under the real danger of disintegration due to threats of separatist forces backed by enemies of Sri Lanka”, states the JVP leader in his letter to President Hu Jintao.

"The JVP, the government and the people of Sri Lanka always stood by and will continue to do so by 'One China Policy'”, the letter concludes.
