Jaffna court inquires Habeas Corpus applications

Habeas Corpus Applications filed by relatives of four Tamil youths of Ariyalai in Jaffna town who were reported missing after being arrested by the Sri Lanka Army during 1996-1997 period came up for inquiry before the Jaffna
Additional Magistrate Ms Srinithi Nanthasekaran Thursday, legal sources said.
Petitioners have cited five respondents Corporal Somaretna Rajapakse, former officer in charge Ariyalai army camp Lalithkumara, army officer based in Palaly military base, former army commander Lionel Balagalle and the Attorney General, the sources said. Petitioners in the HC applications begged court to order the respondents to produce in court the four youths, Chandrasekaran, Nanthakumar, Jatheeswaran and Suthakaran, lthe sources said. Attorney-at-Law Mr.Niranjan appeared for the first respondent Corporal Somaretna Rajapakse and Mr.Tharha Salgado for the second, third and fourth respondents. appeared for the petitioners, the sources said. Further inquiry was put off for May 9th and 10th, the sources said.
