Jaffna protesters urge SLMM action on Santhiveli

A demonstration was held in Jaffna town Thursday condemning the firing
protesting civilians at Santhiveli by Sri Lankan security forces on Monday.
An elderly person was killed and several others, including schoolchildren
were wounded.
Protestors Thursday marched from Nallur Kandaswamy temple to the offices of
the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM), shouting slogans criticising the
Sri Lanka Government and its security forces.

A memorandum was handed over to the SLMM’s representative for the Jaffna District.

A meeting was held in front of the international truce monitors’ office,
before the protestors handed over a memorandum to the SLMM’s representative
for Jaffna District. Jaffna Districr parliamentarians Mr. M. K. Eelaventhan and Mr. M. Sivanesan
were among the others who addressed the meeting. On Tuesday, normal life was disrupted in several parts of the Northeastern
districts of Jaffna, Mannar, Vavuniya, Killinochchi, Mullaitivu,
Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Amparai, by a hartal (general shut down)
condemning the actions of the security forces at Santhiveli.
A large number of students took part in Thursday's demonstration.
