Suriyamoorthy in critical condition

Mr. P. Suriyamoorthy, former Chairman of the Trincomalee Urban Council, who
was shot and seriously wounded Wednesday was airlifted to Colombo, Thursday
morning as his condition became critical, hospital sources said. Mr.
Suriyamoorthy is now undergoing an emergency operation in Colombo general
hospital, sources said.
He sustained gunshot injuries in his abdomen Wednesday night at his
residence when unidentified gunmen shot at him, police sources said. Medical sources said gunshot injuries had damaged the liver of Mr.
Suriyamoorthy and he was in unconscious state after the operation Wednesday
at the Trincomalee
hospital. An independent group led by Mr. Suriyamoorthy won the election for the
Trincomalee UC in 1994. He was Chairman of the Trincomalee Urban Council
between 1994 and 2000. Mr.Suriyamoorthy was a member and chairman of the elected North East
Provincial Council since 1989 till the then President R.Premadasa dissolved
it in 1990. Since then the NEPC is administered by the central government,
sources said.
