Missing SLA soldier's remains found near Vavuniya

The body of Sri Lanka Army (SLA) corporal Sunderadagage Wickremesinghe, who disappeared from Kokuveli Vavuniya SLA camp on 2 Februaray 2005, was discovered in a decomposed state in Notchchimoddai jungles, security sources in Vavuniya said Thursday.

Vavuniya Police Inspector in Charge A.M.C Abeysinghe and Vavuniya District Judge Mr M Ilancheliyan went to the scene to recover the body Wednesday on being notified of the discovery of the body.

Police have arrested three civilians who were employees at the SLA camp on suspicion of murdering the SLA corporal.

According to one of the accused, he had accompanied Mr Wickremesinghe to the nearby village to buy illicit liquor and on their way back the deceased was electrocuted. However, the body was found nearly 2 km from the location pointed to by the accused as where the electrocution took place.

The Judge ruled that there is enough evidence to suspect that it wa s a homicide and ordered the Vavuniya police to send the body for further examnination.

He also directed Vavuniya Police to arrest the primary suspect who is another Soldier from the same SLA camp who has since absconded.
