Japanese Red Cross to rehabilitate two hospitals

Mr. Tadateru Konoe, President of the Japanese Red Cross (JRC) who arrived in Colombo Friday on a five-day visit to Sri Lanka signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS) Friday evening to rehabilitate and reconstruct two government base hospitals, Kantalai in
the Trincomalee district and Chilaw in the Puttalam district. Mr.Jagath Abeyasinghe signed the MoU on behalf of the SLRCS, sources said.

Mr.Konoe and his team first travelled to Chilaw to inspect
the government base hospital where officials of the Puttalam district branch of the SLRCS received him. He visited Kantalai base hospital Saturday evening. Dr.E.G.Gnanagunalan, President of the SLRCS, Trincomalee district branch received Mr.Konoe and his team. Dr.Jagath Malwathage, acting Medical Superintendent showed several sections of the Kantalai hospital to Mr.Konoe and brought to his notice about the urgent needs and shortcomings of the institution, SLRCS sources said.

Dr.Gnanagunalan said the Kantalai hospital has been suffering in providing satisfactory medical service to patients due to several shortages from specialized doctors to modern medical equipments. Mr.Konoe said JRC and SLRCS have been working for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the hospital. He assured full cooperation of the JRC in providing all facilities to this medical institution.
