Jaffna mail slower than usual

Only 37 bags of mail arrived by sea last week in Jaffna, which is far below the usual weekly average 120 bags, despite the settlement of the postal strike, said sources in Jaffna.

The ship chartered by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) which brings the bulk of the mail had averaged around 26 to 28 bags even during the strike, said sources.

Airmail to Jaffna accounts for an average of six bags a day, they said.

The strike crippled postal services in Sri Lanka for around two months. But normal services were restored when the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications met striking union members and agreed to their primary demands while referring the others to a cabinet sub-committee for a decision.
