Mercy Corps donates cycles to Trinco students

Mercy Corps, a non-governmental organization headquartered in United States of America (USA), Monday, donated about eighty bicycles to students affected by tsunami in the Trincomalee district. Mr.R.Thiakalingam, Provincial Education Ministry Secretary inaugurated the distribution to selected students in the Trincomalee education zone, sources in Trincomalee said.
The event was held at Trincomalee Vivekananda College located in Orr's Hill, a suburb in Trincomalee town. Students affected tsunami from Vigneswara Maha Vidiyalayam, Sinhala Maha Vidiyalayam, Jamaliya Muslim Maha Vidiyalayam and Vivekananda College were selected as beneficiaries under this project. Ms Cretchen, Regional Programme Manager of the Mercy Corps in Trincomalee was present at the event. Mr. Thiakalingam said about two hundred schools have been affected and several students perished during the tidal waves. Students who survived the disaster have lost their school texts books, uniforms and cycles and other materials. The donation of cycles would help affected students who live far from schools to attend classes. Ms Cretchen also spoke.
