Sri Lanka's Security Council to discuss LTTE ultimatum

Following the discussion held Friday between Mr.Hagrup Haukland, Head of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) and Dr.Jayantha Dhanapala, Secretary General of the Government Peace Secretariat, Sri Lanka's President Ms Chandrika Kumaratunge has arranged to meet the National Security Council to take a decision regarding the ultimatum issued by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) to ensure security of the LTTE cadres when travelling through the government controlled area as mandated by the Cease Fire Agreement, political sources in Colombo said.

Mr.Haukland briefed Dr.Dhanapala about the stand taken by the LTTE when he met Mr.S.P.Thamilchelvan, LTTE Political Head Thursday in Killinochchi, sources said.

Dr.Dhanapala assured the SLMM head that he would inform him about theGovernment stand on the LTTE ultimatum after he meets the President, sources said.

Dr.Dhanapala met with Ms Kumaratunge on Friday night, sources said.

Dr.Dhanapala later said the discussion he had with the SLMM was cordial and constructive but declined to give any details, media sources in Colombo said.

The two week ultimatum issued by the Liberation Tigers expires on 14 July 2005.
