SLMM, SLA officials to meet to discuss LTTE ultimatum

Mr.Hagrup Haukland, Norwegian Head of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) and top officials of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and the Sri Lanka Navy will meet in Colombo Wednesday to discuss the ultimatum issued by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) demanding the government to ensure safety passage for LTTE cadres by road through army controlled areas, security sources in Colombo said.

LTTE Political Head Mr.S.P.Thamilchelvan issued the ultimatum in writing to SLMM head when the latter met him in Killinochchi last week over the recent Welikanda ambush on the LTTE cadres travelling through the army controlled area from Killinochchi to Batticaloa, sources said.

Mr.Haukland handed a copy of the letter of Mr.Thamilchelvan to Dr.Jayantha Dhanapala, Secretary General of the Government Peace Secretariat when he met the latter Friday in Colombo. Dr Dhanapala assured the SLMM head that he would hand over the letter to the Government for necessary action.

Meanwhile, an earlier report from Colombo said the National Security Council was scheduled to meet during the weekend to discuss LTTE's ultimatum, sources said.
