A Sri Lankan policeman in mufti was shot dead today by unidentified attackers, believed to be members of the Liberation Tigers, at Nilaveli north of Trincomalee, said police sources in the eastern port town.
Two policemen had been waiting at a bus stop when they were approached by two youths on a bicycle. The youths had fired at the duo, killing one of them. The other escaped unhurt said the sources. Trincomalee police sources pointed out that the Liberation Tigers have been targetting Sri Lankan army and police intelligence officers in the eastern province. Elsewhere, police sources in Batticaloa said that a bomb had been found at Chenkaladi junction, north of Batticaloa town, this morning at 10a.m. The device was defused by a joint patrol by troops of the Sri Lankan Army (SLA) and cadres of the Tamil Eelam Liberation Organisation (TELO).
