One LTTE cadre killed, two Navy soldiers injured in Trincomalee

One Liberation Tiger cadre was killed and two Sri Lankan Navy soldiers were injured in a shooting incident that took place near Perkar area in Kumburupiddy division north of Trincomalee, according to Police sources. The incident took place near the German radio relay station Deutche Velle around 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Meanwhile, Kumburupiddy villagers, who have taken refuge in the Methodist Church, said that two Tamil civilians are missing in the area following the shooting incident.

The missing youths are Muthiah Rasa (20) and Thangarajah Keetheswaran (25) of Kumburupiddy, according to residents.

An LTTE cadre injured in the incident has been admitted to Hospital, sources said.

Names of the LTTE cadres or the injured Navy soldiers were not available at the moment.

Sri Lankan soldiers have rounded up the Vipulananda Kiramam, a resettled village in the Kumburupiddy division Thursday evening following the incident.

Families were not allowed to move out of the village, sources said.

Meanwhile, naval personnel Thursday evening conducted house to house search in the villages, Nilaveli and Gopalapuram.

On representation by the residents, Trincomalee district parliamentarian Mr.R.Sampanthan immediately contacted the Eastern Naval Commander Rear Admiral Wasantha Karanagoda who is in overall charge of the security of the district and requested him to take steps to prevent harassment of villagers, sources said.
