About five hundred representatives of civil groups in the Jaffna district
Monday decided to hold one-day peoples' agitation campaign mustering
several thousand people to seek the support of the international community
to recognize the self-determination rights of the Tamil people in Sri
Lanka, civil sources in Jaffna said.
Mr.Cyril Solomon, Chairman of the Jaffna District Civil Groups Forum
presided over the meeting held at the Kailasapathy Auditorium in the Jaffna
University. The campaign will be held during the first week of August, organizers said. At the conclusion of the campaign a general proclamation will be made
revealing the position of the Tamil community on the Tamil national
question, they added. The discussion was held amid tense situation now prevailing in the
northeast province following attacks against the LTTE political cadres in
the government controlled areas in the east. The Supreme Court ruling
suspending key clauses of the P-TOMS agreement which was signed by the
government and the LTTE recently to undertake urgent rehabilitation and
reconstruction works in the tsunami hit coastal areas of the province, has further worsened the situation, according to the organizers. The discussion commenced around 11.30 a.m. and continued for about two
hours, sources said. It was also decided to expand the peoples agitation campaign other districts of the northeast province, sources said.
