A Muslim youth, Shaul, 22, was wounded yesterday evening around 5.30 p.m., when a TELO cadre opened fire, said sources in Batticaloa. The TELO cadre was guarding a Sri Lankan Army check post in the boader area between Kaththankuddy and Ariampathy on Batticalo-Kalmunai road, said sources.
The youth has been admitted to the Batticaloa hospital. The TELO cadre opened fire when two youths, one of them in army uniform, approached the check post and tried to grab the gun, said TELO sources in Batticaloa. The wounded youth, however, said that the TELO cadre opened fire following a brawl. The youth in army uniform was arrested and handed over to the Police. Police inquiries revealed that the uniform belonged to the youth's brother, an ex-SLA soldier who had since left the country. Meanwhile sources in Batticalo said that a bomb exploded with huge sound on Buffalo Island, 1.5 k.m. north of Batticaloa, last night. Further details are not known.
