TELO warns against anti social behaviour

Three men involved in brewing illicit liquor (kasippu) were publicly punished yesterday, near the railway station in Jaffna, by the Tamil Eelam Liberation Organisation (TELO), an ex-Tamil militant group which has members in some of the local government bodies in the Jaffna peninsula and operates with the army in the eastern province, Vavuniya and Mannar.

Placards saying, "I brew kasippu" and "I destroy 40 families for a better life for my family" were hung round their necks.

A TELO official explained to journalists that his organisation would not allow the brewing of 'kasippu' or the selling of narcotics and the screening porn movies.

He took the occasion to warn those involved in such activities and added that the TELO would not allow children to go to movies during school time.

Journalists were also told that TELO had come to know of some schoolgirls, from a specified school, who had become involved in prostitution with SLA soldiers.

Unoccupied houses near the railway station were being used for such acts he added.

He said further that TELO had brought the matter to the attention of the school principal and the parents.

The official warned that TELO would take stern action if such anti-social behaviour continued.
