Two SLA soldiers killed in Jaffna

Latest reports from Jaffna said two soldiers were killed in the attack by the Liberation Tigers on an SLA position at Chavakkalai Chanthi (junction) in the high security zone of Kurunagar this evening around 6.30 p.m. Residents in the area said the LTTE had fired on the army and lobbed grenades at the troops.

Four women were wounded in the SLA's retaliatory fire, following the explosion said sources in Jaffna. They were rushed to the Jaffna hospital

According to reports from Jaffna town earlier this evening four Sri Lankan Army (SLA) soldiers were wounded in an explosion in Kurunagar.

The army cordoned off and a searched the area. No one was allowed to enter said sources.

Three of the women who were wounded in the army's retaliatory fire were identified as: Sukanthi Sellathurai, 19 Ithaya Mary Charles, 65 Arulmary Arulthas, 37

The condition of the fourth woman is said to be serious said Jaffna hospital sources. Tension mounted in the area following the explosion said sources.

Kurunagar is large suburb of the Jaffna town by the coast. The Liberation Tigers had launched several attacks since January on SLA positions in the area.

A large number of the people in the suburb are fisher folk.
