Civilian killed in army fire

A young woman, Thevathas Subajini, 19, was killed and five others wounded by retaliatory fire from the army following an attack by the Liberation Tigers, in which two Sri Lankan Army (SLA) soldiers were killed, said sources in Jaffna. The attack, which took place around 6.30 p.m yesterday, was mounted against a SLA position at the Chavakkalai Chanthi (junction) in the tight security area of Kurunagar, near Jaffna town.
The civilians wounded by the retaliatory fire were identified as: Sukanthi Sellathurai, 19, Ithaya Mary Charles, 65, Arulmary Arulthas, 37, Senathirajah Arunthavarajah, 29 Pasubala Antony, 70. In a search operation following the attack SLA army soldiers assaulted and injured 8 civilians. They are identified as: Marimuthu Vasanthakumar, 27, Aarokium Gnanapiragasam, 28, Antony Thanabalu, 23, Antony Rajee, 21 Nobert Robert Jude, 18 Donald Gilbert, 27 Antonipillai Amalathas, 50 Mudiyappan Mariyathas, 44 They have been admitted to the Jaffna Teaching hospital. Meanwhile two women; S. Concey, mother of one and V.Manju 18, were arrested yesterday by the SLA for interrogation, said sources in Jaffna.
