Appeal Court issues notice on AG in case against JVP leader

Sri Lanka's Court of Appeal Monday issued notice on the Attorney General to appear in court on 25 October and state his position on the Writ Application filed by Dr. Kumar Rupesinghe of the Foundation for Co-Existence (FCE), seeking an order directing the Inspector General of Police to arrest and charge Mr.Wimal Weerasinghe, parliamentary group leader of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) for alleged offences of criminal intimidation, insult and annoyance, legal sources said.

The petitioner Dr.Kumar Rupesinghe has cited the IGP, Mr.Wimal Weeravanse, Mr.Tilvin Silva, JVP general secretary and the Attorney General as respondents in his application, the sources said.

According to the writ application, the petitioner has charged that Mr.Wimal Weeravanse made a speech addressing the meeting of the National Patriotic Movement in Maharagama on 6 April this year warning the non-governmental organizations, its subscribers and members with specific reference to him and his FCE, as traitor organizations and its members as conspirators against the country.

The writ application came up in Court of Appeal Monday.

The court issued notice on the Attorney General to appear and submit his position in regard to the writ application on the next date and fixed the inquiry for 25 October, the sources said.
