[TamilNet, Tuesday, 11 October 2005, 17:02 GMT]
The group of southern journalists, including three Buddhist monks at the conclusion of their 4-day goodwill mission donated a consignment of goods, including learning and teaching materials, to the Tamil Rehabilitation Organization (TRO) at an event held at the Trincomalee district office of the TRO Tuesday morning. Southern journalists requested the TRO officials in Trincomalee to distribute these materials to war and tsunami affected students in LTTE held areas in the district.

Mr.C.Kumarakuruparan, TRO District Deputy Director accepted the gift and thanked the southern journalists for the generosity.

Earlier a delegation of the TRO Trincomalee district administration led by Mr.Kumarakuruparan met with the southern journalists at the Trincomalee Shanmuga Boys' Home.

He told the visitors that TRO has been implementing rehabilitation and reconstruction projects in war and tsunami affected areas in the district without racial and religious differences. TRO serves all the communities, Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims alike. TRO do not discriminate any community, he stressed.

TRO has been implementing several welfare projects not only in LTTE held areas but also in government-controlled areas in the Trincomalee district.

The group of southern journalists who arrived in Trincomalee Saturday evening visited Kuchchaveli and other villages affected by tsunami last year and distributed materials to the victims.

The delegation toured the Trincomalee town and saw the controversial Buddha statue, which stands close to the central bus terminal and surrounded by fish and meat markets and wine stores, sources said.

Southern journalists during their visit to Trincomalee were briefed by local leaders that Trincomalee had become a garrisoned city following the unlawful erection of Buddha statue in the heart of the town, the sources said.
