SLA complicit in Jaffna killings, Ilamparithi tells SLMM

Deputy Head of the Jaffna office of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM), Mr Jorn and member of SLMM, Mr Matti, met with a delegation of LTTE led by its Head of Jaffna Political Wing, C Ilamparithi at the political office of the LTTE in Pallai, Monday, sources in Jaffna said. The discussions centered on the increasing number of killings in Jaffna district.

Ilamparithi told the SLMM delegation that LTTE officials are convinced that there is Sri Lanka Army (SLA) complicity in several of the killings including the shooting death of the owner of video store in Uduvil. Ilamaparithi said their office has received articles of evidence confirming to the involvement of Head of SLA Jaffna Intellligence Wing, Mr Mahes Banda, from local residents.

Ilamparithi further told the members of the SLMM that killings, harassment of Jaffna residents, thefts, drug abuse, and incidents of rape have increased following the withdrawal of LTTE political cadres from Jaffna district.

Ilamparithi accused the Police of corrupt practices and of allowing perpetrators of crimes to go unpunished leading to worsening crime rate.

Hand grenades used in several of the violent incidents are of the same type used by the SLA, Ilamparithi told the SLMM.

Ilamparithi urged the SLMM to take steps to arrest the incipient cultural decay and to stop the violence perpetrated by paramilitaries working with the SLA.
