Ian Martin meets Thamilchelvan, Heads of Police, Judiciary

Former President of Amnesty International and Human Rights expert, Mr Ian Martin, met with Head of the LTTE Political Wing, S P Thamilchelvan, Head of Tamileelam Judiciary, Mr Pararajasingham and Head of Tamileelam Police, Mr Nadesan, separately in Kilinochchi Thursday to discuss matters related to strengthening human rights structures in the NorthEast, sources in Kilinochchi said.

During the meeting at the LTTE Peace Secretariat around 12 noon Thamilchelvan expressed his appreciation to Mr Martin for his continued engagement and commitment to matters related to human rights in the NorthEast and pointed out the incorporation of Mr Martin's suggestions in the Interim Self Governing Authority proposals (ISGA).

Mr Martin told Thamilchelvan that he is willing to be of assistance to the Tamil people in strengthening the instruments for safeguarding human rights currently led by the North East Secretariat on Human Rights (NESOHR).

Through Mr Martin, Thamilchelvan extended invitations to other human rights activists to visit Tamil areas and to witness for themselves the living conditions of the people.

Mr Martin then visited the TamilEelam Law College and complemented Head of Tamileelam Judiciary, Mr Pararajasingham, on the progress made by the judicial branch in incorporating provisions for protecting human rights in the penal code. He also met with Judges and attorneys and briefed them on the importance of legislation to strengthen human rights.

Mr Martin then proceeded to Head Quarters of Tamileelam Police at 3.30 p.m and met with Head of Police, Mr P Nadesan. Mr Martin said he was encouraged by the importance given by the Police to the Rights of the community and learnt details of other aspects of policing in the NorthEast.

Earlier in the morning, at the NESOHR facility, Mr Martin witnessed the release of 26 underage youths who volunteered to join the LTTE to their parents. Following this event, Norwegian embassy officials, Ms. Solfried Lien, an Executive Officer at the Norwegian Foreign Ministry, and the Second Secretary at the Norwegian Embassy met with NESOHR officers.
